Returning To US
When your vehicle is registered in the US, and it’s been in Canada for less than one year, your transport is considered a US Registered Returning Vehicle. This is most often the case with Snowbirds, people visiting Canada for an extended period of time, or vehicles transported temporarily for specialty repairs.
Temporary Import
A Temporary Import is a Canadian registered vehicle that is shipped to the US on a temporary basis for less than a year. This type of transport, like a US Registered Returning Vehicle, is most common with Snowbirds, extended visits, or specialty repairs.
Formal Entry
A Canadian Registered Vehicle that is being imported to the US permanently requires a Formal Entry. This includes relocation, corporate-owned vehicles, and vehicles for resale in the US. If a vehicle is corporate-owned, or if it’s being imported for resale, a Registered Import is required.
This form of import utilizes a 3299 CBP Entry form and includes the steps below:

This import is utilized for currently U.S. registered vehicles that are returning to the U.S.

This import does not work for vehicles that have obtained a currently active Canadian registration

This import is also utilized for currently U.S. registered vehicles returning to the U.S. on a CBP Form 4455
Requirements for Import
The requirements for this type of import are simple. You will be required to provide a copy of your legal identification, the vehicle’s current and active U.S. registration, and U.S. title. Our customs team will automatically pull your vehicle’s most current fair market value for you.
If your vehicle is re-entering on a CBP Form 4455, we will need a copy of the stamped 4455 from when your vehicle entered into Canada.
Registration and Documentation
For this type of import there are no documents you will need for registration. You will simply update your registration as per usual when your current registration needs renewing.
This form of import utilizes a 3299 CBP Entry form and includes the steps below:

This import is only valid for a 12-month period. This means that your vehicle MUST return to Canada no later than 12 months from the day of entry.

This import is best suited for importers wanting to temporarily enter the U.S. for any of the following reasons:

Requirements for Import
The requirements for this type of import are simple. You will be required to provide a copy of your legal identification, the vehicle’s current and active Canadian registration, and a copy of your visa or contract if entering for work, sports, or as a student. Our customs team will automatically pull your vehicle’s most current fair market value for you.
Registration and Documentation
For this type of import there are no documents required for U.S. registration, as you will not be able to title your vehicle in the U.S. However, some states do require that you temporarily register your vehicle as a visitor if staying longer than 6 months. You will need to contact your local state’s DMV to obtain this information.
A formal import into the U.S. is any vehicle entering the U.S. for more than a 12 month period that is not U.S. titled.
This import best suits individuals importing for the following reasons:

U.S. Citizen who has purchased a Canadian vehicle

Entry for a visa lasting longer than 12 months
This import type is also utilized for formal re-import of vehicles that have previously been U.S. titled, but now have active Canadian registrations.
Requirements for Import
You will be required to provide a copy of your legal identification, the vehicle’s current and active Canadian registration, and a bill of sale or gift letter if applicable. Our customs team will automatically pull your vehicle’s most current fair market value for you.
Vehicle formally re-importing to the U.S. will need to provide a copy of their previous Canadian Import Form 1.
Vehicles younger than 25 years old will also be required to provide the following documents:

Letter of Compliance from the vehicle’s manufacturer

A photo of your vehicle’s manufacturer’s label

A photo of your vehicle’s EPA label

Registration and Documentation
For this type of import there are several forms that you will need to legally register and title your vehicle in the U.S. These forms will be provided to you by our customs specialist after the customs filing process has been completed and your vehicle physically crosses the border.
We will also keep a copy of all documents on file for a minimum of 3 years. This means that for any reason you may need a copy of these documents, we will be able to provide them to you without extra charges that you would incur if you requested them from CBP or the broker.

What Is A Registered Import?
If a vehicle is bring imported into the US as a corporate owned vehicle, or if it’s being resold in the US, it must go through a Formal Entry, which includes a Registered Import. A Registered Import is a lengthy and meticulous process that involves specific paperwork, a speedometer conversion, and a 30 day hold in a Registered Import Facility.
